t surely cannot be common to see leaves on Grenache vines in the middle of winter. On 9 January, a winegrower in the southern part of Gard in the South of France posted the first – of many? – photos illustrating how early the season is. Although he wished to remain anonymous, he explained that this is the first time he has seen vines budding so early in the season. “The vines are in a slightly weak block planted in 1990 that I have yet to prune”, he said, adding that unlike some of his colleagues he was lucky enough to get through the frost and hail both in 2021 and 2022 unscathed.

Winegrowers in the Pyrénées Orientales area along the Spanish border are also experiencing the same phenomenon with Syrah. On Facebook, there are also comments about bud burst on Muscat of Alexandria. According to agro-climatology experts, vine budburst could be widespread and well ahead of schedule starting in mid-February in Bordeaux, the South-West, Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Orientales, and the entire Mediterranean rim if the mild weather continues.
