A Champagne designed to be drunk in space

rinking habits are changing, even thousands of miles away from Earth. Reims-based Champagne company G.H. Mumm (Pernod Ricard Group) has just announced an unprecedented collaboration with Axiom Space, an American company specialising in space travel. The idea has been in the pipeline since 2017 and the first example of the label was presented in 2018. But it has now reached a landmark moment – it complies with the very strict specifications for meeting the safety requirements of the National Centre of Space Studies (CNES).
To become eligible for the certification, Mumm had to carry out a great deal of research and experimentation. There are countless crucial points that need to be factored into the space tasting experience – it is a gaseous liquid in a gravity-free environment, the bottle contains pressure, it has to be suitable for food contact, there are material specifications, the amount of room it takes up has to be considered as well as the ergonomics.
The wine is contained in a half-bottle of glass secured by a perfectly reliable stainless steel opening-closing device. The Champagne only comes into contact with glass and stainless steel – just like with Mumm's blending vats.
