biblical message has been chosen to adorn the label of the 1855-classified First Growth Château Mouton Rothschild (84 hectares in Pauillac). The 2017 vintage is signed by artist Annette Messager, with a painting that certainly makes a striking impact. In the beginning was the verb, stresses Annette Messager, superimposing layers of the word Hallelujah, the name of her painting, which reveal a celestial female bosom welcoming a glass of wine carried by a hand recalling Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam (Vatican).

In an approach that is both realistic and symbolic, she combines two substances, milk and wine, which the Bible often associates with each other, hymning the virtues of both”, noted a statement by chateau owners, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, Camille Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild.

Payment in kind

Since 1945, the label of each vintage of Château Mouton Rothschild's first wine has been illustrated by a painting created for the occasion by a contemporary artist (from Braque to Miró, and Soulages to Bacon). “In exchange for their contribution, [the artists] do not receive money but cases of Mouton Rothschild”, said the barony.
