The most expensive bottle of Burgundy in the world costs €35,219
hristies organised an auction of old vintages dating from 1846 to 2009 of first and great growths from the Côte de Nuits and the Côtes de Beaune on September 3 in Hong Kong on behalf of Burgundy wine company Bouchard Père & Fils. Of the 2,000 bottles offered for sale, those dating back to the 19th century proved to be the most popular, said the company in a press statement.
An 1865 Chambertin reached a record high of €35,219 thus becoming “the most expensive” bottle of Burgundy in the world. Other examples of prices included a Montrachet from the same year which fetched €22,540, a Volnay Santenots €21,131 and a Meursault Charmes from 1846 which sold for €15,496.
The press statement gives no information on the identity or origin of the buyers. The total proceeds from the sale reached 3.4 million euros. Negociant house Bouchard Père & Fils boasts a collection of nearly 150,000 bottles of old vintages stored in its cellars in Beaune.
