French Bulk wines: varietal VSIG wines consolidate, PGI sets record new value

ranceAgriMer registered that 3.8 million hectoliters of Wine Without Geographical Indication (VSIG) was sold in bulk during the 2011-2012 campaign, amounting to a € 213 million turnover (respectively +34 % and + 41 % compared to 2010-2011). These sharp increases were due mainly to the range of VSIG made with a variety of grapes. This situation is explained by an increase in volumes, which stems from the introduction of a new category as well as the rise in prices.

The price difference between VSIG bulk wine with and without grape variety has consolidated: 67 € /hl for a white wine with grape variety against 45 € / hl without. Rosé prices are 62 € /hl against 52 € /hl. For reds, the difference is 60 € /hl against 56 € /hl. The average VSIG price has universally increased by 10 € during these past two campaigns. The PGI volume remains stable, around 8 million hectoliters for an increased turnover of €569 million. PGI rosés and whites faced a lower demand. Selling for an average of 71.58 €/hl, PGI prices have never been so high.
