Sustainable development : PGI wines invest in reliable certifications
T

he concept of sustainable development is translated into a multitude of initiatives. For example, the Cave de Tain l'Hermitage has recently formalized a long-term approach by adopting the label 'Vignerons en Développement Durable' from the ICV (Cooperative Institute for Wine), which fellow cooperatives (Dom Brial, Mont Tauch, Sieur d'Arques, EVOC, Laudun Chusclan, Moulin de la Roque, Mont Ventoux, Vacqueyras and Jaillance) already comply to. In Limoux, Anne de Joyeuse created its own certification : "Protect the planet". In turn, wine-trader Jeanjean chose to enroll in the standard of AFAQ 1000NR, integrating sustainable development and quality management. Another example CLVD (Celliers du Languedoc wine distribution), which has staked its inception in 1993 on the label and the spirit of organic farming.

Given this diversity difficult to read for wine consumers, Jacques Gravegeal any recent president of the Committee of PGI INAO for wines and ciders, appealed at the show Vinisud to create a label for sustainable development. To move from words to deeds, he announced that a coordination of PGI wine throughout the European Union was being created. Finally, he suggested that such coordination would require transforming the PGI in a sustainable development label, to make things even clearer.
