he Barthe group is continuing its diversification strategy. The company, which brings together the Boutes, Garonnaise and Miquel cooperages alongside a stave mill, has ventured into a new line of business which, at first glance, seems far removed from its core activities. It now markets compostable stretch film for packaging – Biowrap.

The development marks the culmination of a partnership agreement struck in 2021 between Barthe and Bruno Collos, the designer of this innovative film which is the first to be entirely compostable. “We have been using Biowrap in conjunction with hemp to protect our barrels for four years. It leaves no micro particles in the environment”, stresses Julien Ségura, deputy managing director at Barthe. “We were already the distributor for Biowrap in the wine and spirits industry and it has found favour with prestige customers. All the feedback we have had with a product that is both as adhesive and reliable as conventional plastic films is positive”.

The Barthe group acquired the patent for Biowrap and established a subsidiary company, ‘Le Beau Projet’ which is managed by Paul Barthe with Bruno Collos appointed as sales manager. “Biowrap is more expensive than alternative plastic films but it is environmentally-friendly and good quality”, explains Barthe. “We are targeting companies in France and abroad which are committed to social and environmental responsibility, not just for wines and spirits but also in logistics (palletisation), the hospitality industry and the food industry because Biowrap also comes in versions designed for preserving food”.

The Barthe group will be rolling out a multichannel communications strategy to raise awareness of this environmentally-friendly film
