Verallia launches the world’s lightest Burgundy-style bottle, weighing just 300g
wo years after the Bordeaux-style bottle, Verallia has replicated its efforts to produce the lightest bottle in its category with its new Burgundy-style iteration. The ‘Air 300G’ is therefore being heralded by its manufacturer as “the world’s first ultra-light Burgundy bottle standing 290 mm tall”. Describing the new model as a “feat of engineering”, Verallia says it has “reduced material usage and CO2 emissions stemming from production by 33%”. According to data released by the glass manufacturer, that equates to “66 tonnes in avoided CO2 emissions (scopes 1 and 2), an energy saving of 279 MWh and 74m3 of water savings” per one million bottles produced.
Depending on the chosen colour, up to 86% of recycled glass can be used to make the new bottle, further reducing its environmental footprint. On display at this month’s Sitevi exhibition in Montpellier from November 25 to 27, the Air 300G Burgundy bottle “will soon be available in both screwcap and cork finishes and in three colours – cinnamon brown, antique green and flint”. In 2024, Verallia produced over 16 billion glass bottles and jars, posting revenue of €3.5 billion euros. The company highlights the benefits of marketing wine in lighter bottles, citing the highly competitive UK market as an example: “The bottle helps reduce responsibility under the Extended Producer Responsibility scheme and carbon footprint”, adds the press statement.
The lighter bottles also address consumer demand in a number of markets and are fully aligned with Verallia’s CSR roadmap “Net Zero 2040 where it aims to reduce CO2 emissions (scopes 1 and 2) by 90% and offset the remaining 10% by 2040 compared with the baseline year 2019”.
