Could there be another stir in the vineyards of Provence? This seems to be the likely scenario playing out around the purchase of Domaine du Canadel in Brignoles by actor Georges Clooney and his lawyer wife Amal Alamuddin. Three days after it was announced that the couple would be arriving in Provence, another buyer’s lawyer is contesting the purchase in court. His client had already bought the estate for six million euros. According to local sources, the Clooneys bought the property for a higher amount, estimated at between 8 and 10 million euros.

In the event that the vendor decides to go ahead and sell the property to a third party, in this case Mr Clooney, with the help of a notary, uncertainty will surround the property until the Draguignan judicial court has reached a decision, which could take one to four years”, said lawyer Guy Azzari to Agence France Presse, confirming a report by local newspaper Var Martin.

Again according to local journalists, the Draguignan court was presented with a summons last March by the lawyer against the vendors. The case is now in the hands of the defence counsels of the different parties involved and is likely to run over several months.

Domaine du  Canadel, which is in the same area as Château de Miraval, owned by American actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, boasts a 17th century farmhouse and covers 172 hectares, less than 5 hectares of which have bearing vines. The grapes are taken to the Correns co-operative winery to be vinified.
