There was no En Primeur week at the end of April for Bernard Magrez, who did not miss a moment of this long court case. There was no En Primeur week at the end of April for Bernard Magrez, who did not miss a moment of this long court case.

On 30 April, the first chamber of the Bordeaux criminal court convicted the six men charged with kidnapping and burglarising Bernard Magrez, owner of four Grands Crus Classés, and his wife, at their Bordeaux home overnight on 11 January 2018. The five attackers were each sentenced to five years in prison with a detention warrant for kidnapping and violence against the Magrez couple. The six people convicted were also summoned to pay one euro in damages to the victims, as per the request of their lawyer.

Comparing the consistent body of evidence gathered through lengthy police investigations with the single line of defence taken by the 6 defendants, presiding judge Jean-Luc Ybres generally followed the requests of the public prosecutor, who condemned “a pack of lies and conspiracy of silence”. Judge Ybres emphasised that the convictions were not based on “direct material elements of the offence, but the court does have several serious clues and the strong presumption leading to an assessment of such a degree of probability that can leave no serious doubt”.

Not wishing to speak after the ruling, Bernard Magrez did not miss a moment of the four-day trial, which was held from 27 to 30 April. His lawyer Pierre Blazy said he believed the court had “fittingly condemned the defendants. The Magrez couple are satisfied that the case is over. [Through the four day-hearing,] the truth was exposed. We know everything about the events, which is pivotal for the Magrez couple to be able to move on”.

From a US perpective, five years in prison each for a vilent crime seems like light sentences. And, we would not add up the years in the headline.
