Film director Nicolas Vanier, who has directed films such as ‘The Last Trapper’, ‘Belle & Sebastian’ and ‘Spread your Wings’, is setting up his cameras in the Montagne de Reims area of Champagne. Shooting of his next film, titled ‘Champagne!’ is due to start over the next few weeks. It tells the story of a Champagne grower who invites a group of old friends for a weekend. One of her friends, who is single, introduces them to his new girlfriend. And things do not go according to plan!

"I imagined a superficial world"

The Champagne region and Champagne will be the focus of his next feature film. Nicolas Vanier discovered the region in 2017, during a conference on mankind and nature organised by the Unesco Mission.

I knew little about the region”, Nicolas Vanier told journalists at L'Hebdo du Vendredi. “I imagined large estates, huge blocks of vines, a world of luxury, lots of automation and, to put it bluntly, a slightly superficial world. I actually discovered the complete opposite, as in small plots of land, with a varied topography and forests that create a very interesting landscape from a cinematographic point of view, with these magnificent colours and perspectives. But I also found unpretentious people, even in the big Champagne houses, who have a close connection with the land and who nurture an incredible passion for what they do. I was inspired by these passionate winegrowers, both men and women, to write this film”.

Filming is scheduled to finish at the end of June 2021. The film should be released in France in 2022.
