There is no white smoke yet, but a few fumaroles are already indicating that volcanic vineyards are reaching boiling point. “We can feel that the public is showing an interest in volcanic wines. Their image is accessible because it captures the imagination. These are also high altitude wines, with fresher profiles that meet market demand.  We can see that some winegrowers are starting to grasp the commercial potential. It's up to us to be vigilant, it will require education”, announces Pierre Desprat, chairman of Vinora, the association that organised the first international exhibition of volcanic wines on 30 January 2020, attracting 500 visitors.

Although there will be no show in 2021, for obvious reasons, the association is mulling over international specifications to guarantee the volcanic origins of a wine purporting to be such. “We don't want a private brand, but an endorsement. We would like a certification with specifications and an inspection body”, explains Desprat.

Although Vinora intends to provide a framework for the geological definition of wines from volcanic vineyard sites, the jury is still out on the issue of aroma and flavour differentiation. To start providing some answers to this, last September the association launched a comparative study in the Puy-de-Dôme, funded to the tune of €20,000 by the county council. Vinora hopes “to see what differences there are, if any”, sums up Desprat, who has already announced that the protocol will be ramped up and will move on to other grape varieties and vineyard sites over several years.
