The exception has become the rule. Due to the lack of organic vine plants in France, organic winegrowers use young vines sourced from conventional outlets. The new plantings are declared in the switch-over phase to organic for 3 years, during which time they cannot produce wines.

The new European regulation 2018/848 will act as a game-changer. As soon as it enters into force, which the European Commission has suggested postponing until 1 January 2022, special permission will no longer be systematic. “If the young vines are not available organically, which will inevitably be the case as there is currently no production of certified young organic vines in France, special permission will have to be applied for in situ, specifying the number of young vines and the scheduled planting date”, explains Guillaume Careil, a Loire Valley nurseryman and organic advisor for the French Federation of Vine Nurseries (FFPV).

Winegrowers who do not comply with the new rules will run the risk of having their vineyards declassified. By 2035, no more exemptions will be granted and the use of certified young organic vines will become the norm.

The nursery industry is working in concert with the National Institute of Origin and Quality (INAO) and a group of experts on the future specifications. “We will only be able to treat the rootstocks with organically approved post-harvest products. In practical terms, this means that we will no longer be able to use fungicides to disinfect the roots”, explains Careil. “Hormone-treated paraffin wax will also be banned post-harvest, but we have already done away with it because of the cost”.
