Attracting tourists in a post-Covid world is undoubtedly a challenge. The Greater Reims council has chosen to launch a new thrust called “Champagne, to make your summer awesome!” Visitors to the city will be treated to a bottle of grower Champagne. The greeting has an undeniably elegant touch, though there are a few strings attached.

The authorities bought the Champagne from 68 winegrowers to the tune of 50,000 euros, giving them 3,000 bottles. Eligible holidaymakers will therefore be required to demonstrate their commitment to supporting local tourism to receive the gift. They will have had to eat out in a restaurant (excluding fast-food restaurants), stayed in a hotel or gîte (but not Airbnb accommodation), and purchased a fee-paying leisure or cultural activity such as a trip to the cinema, mountain bike hire or a visit to a Champagne winery. Once they have paid for these holiday treats, visitors are required to go to the Reims tourist information office to receive their complimentary bottle.
