Boxed wines stole the show during lockdown but will they become a hospitality staple?

Lockdown proved to be particularly conducive to sales of boxed wines in French supermarkets, but will the hospitality industry swap bottles for boxes after the end of lockdown? Eric Lanxade, sales director for Caves et Vignobles du Gers in South-West France, which produces 400,000 hectolitres of bulk wine (PGI Côtes de Gascogne and Vin de France) annually, certainly thinks so.

It will not be business as usual and a return to the way things were before the Covid-19 crisis. Permanent disinfection measures for potentially infected surfaces will cause a sea-change in people’s spontaneity towards others and sharing a glass of wine”, said Lanxade, who pointed out that for wine by the glass, “a bottle goes from one table to the next, from one hand to another and could be a vector of the virus”. An alternative is to use 5, 10 or 20-litre wine boxes which can provide a wine by the glass service better suited to the new situation.

Use of carbon materials

After demonstrating their efficacy for home consumption during lockdown, boxed wines could play an even more pivotal role due to existing, underlying trends promoted by the coronavirus crisis – and in particular a reduction in carbon footprints. “The distribution of glass bottles, from the source of the raw material to the table, uses carbon materials that the industry will have difficulty defending with new post-Covid-19 paradigms”, stressed Eric Lanxade, adding: “Boxes are more practical for restaurateurs and generate less packaging”.
