Charles Schaller, an independent winegrower in Mittelwihr (Haut-Rhin), has become chairman of the Crémant d'Alsace producers’ organisation. He takes over from Hervé Schwendenmann, also a winegrower and chairman of the Wolfberger co-operative winery, and wine trader Jacques Cattin (Joseph Cattin company), as per a press release which stressed that the chair must alternate between the two industry strands.

Charles Schaller, who is 40, runs the family vineyard Edgard Schaller & Fils. He will manage a rapidly expanding appellation, both commercially (with sales reaching a record 35.1 million bottles in 2019) and from a volume perspective (29% of volumes produced under AOC d'Alsace). “Crémant d'Alsace has become the real driving force behind the entire Alsace wine region," said the organisation.

France’s second largest sparkling appellation

After Champagne, Crémant d'Alsace is “by far the second largest sparkling AOC in France by volume”.
