“Very many people who hold a position in the wine media today owe him somewhere between a great deal and a huge amount”, is how Nicolas de Rouyn paid tribute to Daniel Benharros in his blog.“Very many people who hold a position in the wine media today owe him somewhere between a great deal and a huge amount”, is how Nicolas de Rouyn paid tribute to Daniel Benharros in his blog. - Photo credit : Profil LinkedIn de Daniel Benharros

Daniel Benharros died on Sunday [23 February]”, said pained blogger Nicolas de Rouyn, paying tribute to “a great wine professional, and an influential man”. Benharros, a consultant for advertising space purchases for the Figaro group (daily newspapers, magazines and the internet), founded its wine and spirits department in 1991 (first called Ediguides, then C'Pages and ultimately subsumed into Figaro Médias*), after managing the advertising departments of Gault & Millau (for the PACA region from 1979 to 1983) and Cuisine et Vins de France (1985-1990).

Referring back to a portrait written in 2013, Nicolas de Rouyn recalled the seminal role played by Daniel Benharros in training a whole generation of journalists and critics, most notably through his Wine Route Guide (Antoine Gerbelle, Michel Smith, Christian Flacelière, Bernard Burtschy, Thierry Desseauve...). Nicolas de Rouyn, who was also mentored by Benharros, pointed out his influence in promoting the culture of wine through the introduction in 1991 of a recurring column dedicated to wine in Le Figaro, with a news page every Thursday in the Et Vous section, as well as features in Le Figaro Magazine and Madame Figaro.
