Carrefour stores are currently taking delivery of 300,000 bottles of the 2019 vintage under the Large Malatric buyers’ own brand. The bottles will display a unique QR Code on their back label, enabling customers to access a web page with the organic certification of the label using their mobile phones. From the map of member growers belonging to the Rauzan co-operative winery to the date of Terres de Vignerons bottling and tasting notes by the Johanès Boubée negociant company, the information displayed is designed to meet consumers' expectations of transparency using the specific technical features of blockchain technology.

The smartphone has become an extension of the packaging, it is a vehicle for communication that goes beyond the label and endorsements”, pointed out Emmanuel Delerm, blockchain development director for the Carrefour group. Used for the first time in the wine industry, the blockchain technology took eight months to develop. “We took our time on what is a first, leaving options open for other wines and regions”, said Eric Yung, director of Johanès Boubée (Carrefour's wine supply subsidiary).

The firm believes that the industry needs to meet the expectations of consumers, who have faith in organic wines, but may ask for more guarantees of authentication in the future. Faced with the imbalance between supply and demand, blockchain technology allows Carrefour to secure its supplies by confirming the certifications of each stakeholder. “Surveys show that consumers are starting to ask questions and wonder if organic is really organic”, concurred Delerm, adding that “today's consumer doesn't just want trust, but proof of trust”.
