In October 2019, the Côtes de Provence appellation became “the first French wine appellation to be recognised by the Russian Federation”, announced a press release by the Provence wine producers’ organisation. Supported by Rospatent, the Russian trademark office, it took two years of administrative and legal procedures to secure registration of the AOC, according to the producers’ organisation.

This is a first step in a move to prevent “attempts to misappropriate the appellation’s reputation and mislead the consumer” in export markets, particularly in “countries where supplies could lead to fake products”, stressed the Côtes de Provence producers’ organisation.

China next in line

The organisation says it is working to protect its AOC in China, where registrations of the Côtes de Provence brand name in Latin and Mandarin characters have been finalised.
