Vinexpo Explorer is a new concept that for the past two years has brought just under a hundred buyers from across the world to a wine region once a year “to discover and develop”.

After Austria in September 2017 and Sonoma in California in September 2018, Beaujolais was chosen this year: “This choice is proof that our region represents something, that it is beautiful and has potential”, explained Dominique Piron, chairman of InterBeaujolais.

One-to-one appointments

The annual “global export business” event took place over two days, on Monday 30 September and Tuesday 1 October, in different parts of the region. 10 journalists and 75 buyers from 33 different countries made the trip. The programme included tastings, visits to vineyards and 25-minute “face-to-face” meetings with producers. 62 of them, including 9 young winegrowers, registered to take part, and presented 5 or 6 wines each time. Approximately ten meetings were expected for each of them.

The chance to turn the spotlight on Beaujolais

The main objective of the event is to allow producers and buyers to engage so that they can develop business: “They are not here on holiday but with a commitment to buy; they have been selected for their interest in buying wines from this region”, said Piron. “But doing business is not easy either, this is a very competitive world”, he stressed.

Given the amount invested by companies - €3,500 in entry fees - the stakes are high and so too are expectations. Exports of Beaujolais are currently underdeveloped, particularly for the growths and the exhibition is therefore seen as an important growth driver for the region.
