226 Médoc châteaux will be able to use the Cru Bourgeois statement on their 2017 vintage wines, totalling 19 million bottles, down 50% compared with 2016 due to the worst-ever frost in 2017. Officially presented to Bordeaux brokers on September 19, this tenth official selection is the last one to be revised annually. The announcement of the five-year classification is scheduled for the end of February 2020, with the presentation of the first classified vintage (the 2018s, as the classification is valid until the year 2022).

Quality pyramid

The annual classification had become unsustainable”, explains Olivier Cuvelier, chairman of the Alliance des Crus Bourgeois du Médoc. Although an annual tasting perpetuated the quality endorsement following the legal attacks that toppled the 2003 classification, “it is now time to up the stakes by making chateaux want to stay and come back. We need a quality pyramid”, stresses Cuvelier. The new classification includes the additional terms “superior” and “exceptional”, which haven’t been used for around fifteen years.
