After transitioning towards greater investment in the supply side during the 2000s, trading companies may well be on their way towards another change in the way they do business, prompted by the need to factor in environmental issues. This is certainly the viewpoint taken by Mickael Alborghetti, who began his career with Georges Vigouroux in Cahors. After creating EthicDrinks in Bordeaux, Mickael Alborghetti outlines his intentions: “The wine industry is introducing environmental initiatives left, right and centre, but trading companies are not building on this progress by trading in an environmentally friendly way”. It has to be said that most wine brands simply feature the AB (organic) or HVE logo, and sometimes choose packaging with a reduced environmental footprint.

Certified carbon neutral

EthicDrinks has chosen to roll out a genuine eco-friendly trading strategy, shaking up the way trading companies do business. Buying wines from all over France with proven environmental credentials (Terra Vitis, HVE, biodynamics..., at market price), the company chooses the greenest packaging it can find to ensure that each component is as environmentally friendly as possible. “We have outlawed plastic”, says Alborghetti, who admits that glass is still the best packaging solution for now because of its "excellent recyclability”. EthicDrinks, owned by Mickael Alborghetti and four shareholders, also offsets its carbon emissions by creating partnerships with associations in India and Africa that are working to reduce emissions. It favours rail transportation and is taking a close look at shipping solutions. The company has been certified carbon neutral and to ensure that these ambitions are sustained throughout its life, Ethic Drinks has been awarded Corp B certification.
