The purchase of Champagne Henri Abelé by Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte could hardly be called a secret, as information had permeated the industry at Vinexpo last May. Nicolas Feuillatte has confirmed that it has treated itself to a Champagne gem, the region’s third oldest house (founded in 1757). The company distributes 300,000 bottles a year entirely through specialised and traditional channels, as well as in its capacity as official supplier to the Royal Courts of Europe, UNESCO and French institutions such as the Elysée palace, the Senate and embassies. Henri Abelé supplies a complete range of labels: Brut, Rosé, Vintages, Blanc de Blancs and its prestigious ‘Sourire de Reims’ label, a tribute to the statue of the “angel with a smile” destroyed during the fire in Reims Cathedral in 1914.

The company also capitalises on the distribution network of Freixnet and Yvon Mau, its owners until the sale. Owning no vineyards of its own, it sources grapes entirely from the vineyards of Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. Nicolas Feuillatte has 82 co-operative winery members totalling 4,500 winegrowers.

Premiumisation

By acquiring this gem, which encapsulates the heritage of the Reims wine industry, the Centre Vinicole - Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte is buying a page in the history of our appellation. The CV-CNF is incorporating in its midst a complementary development model for distribution networks looking for exclusive products with high added value”, commented CV-CNF managing director Christophe Juarez. “To achieve this, we are targeting the long term and are marking a milestone with this external growth to boost our business model”.

The parties agreed not to disclose the cost of the transaction.
