Boasting their own dedicated mobile app (Selection vins - Œnologues de France on App Store and Google Play), the three flagship competitions hosted by the French oenologists’ association (Vinalies, Vinalies internationales and Mondial du Rosé) were presented to the media on June 18 at the International Vine & Wine Organisation in Paris. “At each stage of their work, winemakers taste wines to define technical choices and detect faults. The competitions organised by the French oenologists’ association also show that tasting is a passion for our winemakers. We are not given the skills to communicate with consumers during our training as winemakers, but through these competitions we like to nurture our relationship with consumers. The competitions are a great asset for us!” explained Sophie Pallas, director of the French oenologists’ association.

Increase in the number of gold medals

Combined, the three competitions cover a wide range of wines. In 2019, 2,871 entries were judged at Vinalies, 3,341 at Vinalies Internationales and 1,366 wines at Mondial du Rosé. For all three competitions, the number of gold medals (for wines tasted three times) has increased this year. It stands at 10% for Vinalies, 12.9% for International Vinalies and 10.76% for Mondial du Rosé. Interestingly, gold medal-winning wines from Vinalies are tasted one last time during the French oenologists’ annual congress and a special award is given to each wine region (7 altogether).
