Call it blind faith, but Ronan Laborde, CEO of the Clinet group (Pomerol), who has just been elected for three years as chair of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux (UGCB) claims: “I have the impression that our top wines always end up finding their way into the marketplace. And if it’s not sooner, it’ll be later”. Representing 134 classified and assimilated Grands Crus, the collective promotion organisation introduced and continues to host en primeur wine week, an event that is looked forward to by the trade, but also commercially hazardous.

Although the 2017 futures campaign remained downbeat, with small quantities available and pricing policies debated, Ronan Laborde is still confident: “Our 2017 wines will be bought and eventually be enjoyed.... with no bitterness!” The presentation of the 2018 vintage currently being matured will be held from April 1 to 4, and once again, Ronan Laborde is confident: “We will not count our chickens before they’re hatched, but the weather was very favourable at harvest time. Economically, Bordeaux enjoys unique trading conditions, where the close relationship between brokers and negociants always allows the Grands Crus to find their way. I have no doubt that people around the world are extremely partial to our top wines”.
