From May 31 to June 2, 2019, along the banks of the Mersey, Bordeaux wines will take part in the Liverpool City Festival, thus perpetuating the English event launched last year during the 20th anniversary of Bordeaux Fête le Vin and hosting of the Tall Ships Regatta (which started in Liverpool). “The popularity of the first event gives us an opportunity to set foot on English soil”, explains Christophe Château, communications director for the Bordeaux Wine Marketing Board (CIVB).

While much uncertainty still surrounds the consequences of Brexit, the event should enable around twenty Bordeaux firms to present the specificities of wines from the Gironde area to English consumers. The Bordeaux Wine Festival has exclusive wine tasting rights at the Liverpudlian event, and the wines should soon be shipped to Liverpool to avoid falling under new customs rules (including tariffs).

4 festivals exported in 2019

This English celebration will be the first in a series of four events abroad, an unprecedented execution for the CIVB. In 2019, Bordeaux Fête le Vin will also be held in Quebec City (22-25 August), Brussels (5-8 September) and Hong Kong (31 October-3 November). “Wine festivals are a powerful tool for promoting Bordeaux wines. They put consumers in contact with winegrowers and negociants, with no direct commercial implications (no wine is for sale at the event), promoting a friendly atmosphere – combined with a selection of foods – and providing education on how to taste wine as the Bordeaux Wine School offers training courses”,  sums up Christophe Château.
