Amorim is a great cork manufacturer, it rewards screw caps!” quipped journalist Ophélie Neiman, chair of the selection committee for the Amorim Foundation's innovation and development prize. Accompanied by a cheque for 5,000 euros, the 2018 cork trophy was presented on 21 November to the start-up Vinovae, which offers to ‘recondition’ a bottle of wine and turn it into 36 Vinottes, i.e. small PET bottles with screw cap closures that can be used as samples for wines and spirits.

Created in 2016, the Lyon-based company markets its solution, which is a key price criterion. The start-up prides itself on using a patented process to preserve the organoleptic profile of the wines when transferring them from large to small containers. To protect the wines from oxygen, the 75 centilitre bottles are opened and 36, 2 cl samples filled in a protective atmosphere using an inert gas: argon, CO2, nitrogen....

A sales tool

As individual doses, Vinottes are to wine what perfume samples are to cosmetics. "It is a sales tool: no wine merchant lists a wine without having tasted it," says Tristan Destremau who specifies that Vinottes enables a winegrower or shipper to cut shipping costs in France and abroad by ten. The entrepreneur calculates that with a budget of €1,000 for sending samples, a standard 75 cl format limits shipments to 90 bottles (at a unit cost of €11), while Vinottes allows 379 bottles to be sent (for €1.16 in shipping costs and €1.48 in services in Lyon).
