The result of a process that is both random and carefully prepared”, is how Baron Philippe de Rothschild describes Gerhard Richter’s new illustration for the 2015 label of Château Mouton Rothschild. The press statement goes on to explain how the German artist “spreads enamelled paint over a sheet of Plexiglas then covers it with a sheet of glass, creating amazing moving colour compositions [which he] fixes in a photograph at the ideal moment”. Called “Flux”, the painting illustrates the label of the highly sought-after 2015 vintage with a harmonious blend of living colours.

Every year since the 1945 vintage a new artist has been given the label of Château Mouton Rothschild as a blank canvas: from Georges Braque in 1955 to Francis Bacon in 1999, César in 1967 and Pierre Soulages in 1976, the tradition lives on. Like his illustrious predecessors, Gerhard Richter will be paid in cases of Château Mouton Rothschild.

Generational change

Another signature, that of Philippe Sereys, chairman of the BPR supervisory board, also features for the first time on the 2015 vintage. He began his tenure in 2014 but left the signature of his mother, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, who passed away in 2014, on the label of the 2014 vintage tribute. “Philippe Sereys de Rothschild will now sign the label of Mouton Rothschild on behalf of the three family owners”, said a press statement. The chairman of the board also represents Camille Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild.
