Languedoc shipping firm Compagnie Rhodanienne makes its wine growing debut

Compagnie Rhodanienne, the Languedoc shipping company based in Castillon-du-Gard, is leasing 26 hectares of vines from Château des Sources and 10 hectares from Domaine des Cantarelles, both of them neighbouring estates in the village of Bellegarde, in the Gard area of Southern France. Most of the vines (30 ha) are classed as AOC Costières de Nîmes, with a balance of PGI Oc, and all of them have been farmed (Château des Sources ) or owned (Domaine des Cantarelles ) up until now by a long-standing supplier of the firm, Jean-François Fayel. “Neither his children or those of the Espinas family which owns Les Sources want to take over, so we have reached a mutual arrangement in which we agree to ensure the future of these family-run estates”, pointed out Thomas Giubbi, managing director of Compagnie Rhodanienne.

The company plans to replant 20 hectares of vines over the next 10 to 12 years and to renovate the winery and chateau to host its clients. Through this, its first investment in vineyard property, it intends to underscore its commitment to wine growing, alongside its existing partnership agreements with around twenty estates and chateaux. The initiative is also part of the firm’s drive to move upmarket and supply mid-range to premium wines – until recently, it has been focused mainly on entry-level.
