From sherry.org to sherry.wine – Spain’s oldest DO innovates on the web

As the Jerez DO celebrates its 80th anniversary, the Sherry Wine Council is extremely proud to have launched the first website using the .wine domain name: sherry.wine. “Sherry is the first geographical indication, or indeed brand of any kind, to use the recently approved .wine domain name worldwide”, claimed a press statement. For the Sherry marketing department, the website address marks a new phase in the creation of a global identity for the appellation, which aims to be both consistent and modern, breaking away from the traditional image of fortified wines. Launched on December 14, the address provides access to the website that was revamped last September and is now available in German, Spanish, English and Dutch. The ‘gourmet food’ pages reportedly attract 30% of the website’s visitors and offer recipes, food pairings, cocktail ideas and a list of restaurants. “In 2016, we will continue to expand our global community of gourmet food and wine professionals, as well as developing new initiatives which complement our existing campaigns through a more integrated marketing approach using our online platforms worldwide”, announced Cesar Saldaña, general manager of the Sherry Wine Council, which is also responsible for Manzanilla-Sanlucar de Barrameda and Sherry wine vinegar. Spain’s oldest DO, Sherry comes from the province of Cadiz in Andalusia.
