Bulk wines: stable prices expected for start of 2015-2016 financial year

n its latest August report, international brokerage firm Ciatti predicts that prices of French bulk wines at the start of the new financial year will be similar to last year’s, barring a major weather-related incident between now and harvesting. The report states that “bulk negociants remain busy, buying the remaining batches of red and white wines available, while bottlers are loading at a regular pace in order to fulfil their needs. There is still ample supply for red and white wines in every category. Consequently, the market price for rosé is decreasing and good opportunities are available”.

In Spain, there are still available inventories and consequently, “pricing remains stable for red and rosé wines, while increasing for white wines”. The crop should be lower than last year, due to lack of rainfall with the vineyards of La Mancha primarily affected by a dearth of water. Although it is much too early to announce pricing with any certainty, Ciatti believes that trends in market prices should remain similar to those in France, i.e. relatively stable.

In Italy, where inventories are very low due to a relatively short 2014 crop, the upcoming 2015 harvest could also be small due to the hot weather over the summer. Considering all the imponderables, Ciatti is not venturing any forecasts on pricing trends for the moment.
