ViniPortugal aims to strengthen the value of Portuguese wine exports

Nuno Vale, marketing director of ViniPortugal, told Vitisphere IberoAmerica that the association wants “to promote increased Portuguese wine listings and strengthen the value of our wine exports.”

The country already exports to several foreign markets but intends to increase the volume and, above all, the value of export shipments. According to the Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho (IVV), Portuguese wine exports represented 1.6% of total exports and 15.5% of exports of agricultural products in 2012; the following year, sales of Portuguese wine abroad totalled 725 million euros.

The marketing director says that Canada, the USA, Brazil, Angola, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Germany, Portugal, China, Singapore and Japan are the main markets where the association will be promoting the Wines of Portugal (WoP). “In these markets, ViniPortugal will carry out four types of actions: events, training in Portuguese wines, promotions in retail stores and restaurants and communication,” announces Nuno Vale.

The association will also promote tastings in different markets “where we will encourage producers to submit their new vintages to local trade members, continue to train professionals in Portuguese wines in the Portuguese Wine Academy, take delegations of buyers and journalists to Portugal, and launch street events to consumers and partnerships with restaurants, to name a few,” adds Vale.

“Some Make Wine While Others Make History”

This is WoP’s most recent strapline, following on from the already known: “Welcome to a World of Difference” and “Uniqueness in a Bottle”, to promote Portugal’s long history and tradition of creating wines.

The country’s master winemakers combine a rich heritage of more than 250 grape varieties, and traditional methods with state of the art technology to produce unique wines.
