Austria: New quality pyramid for sparkling wines


The Austrian Sekt Committee has introduced a new quality pyramid for its Sekt wines. The top tier comprises quality wines “on a par with the highest standards maintained by the world’s leading sparkling wines such as Champagne…” claims the Committee. “This quality pyramid represents the beginning of a new era for Austrian Sekt,” says the chairman of the Austrian Sekt Committee, Herbert Jagersberger. Each tier has its own set of rules regarding grape provenance and winemaking techniques. The Committee explains: “Each one equates to a different standard of quality.” Level 1 guarantees the grapes and base wines are of Austrian origin and that the wines have been matured for at least 9 months on the lees. On the level above, the wines must undergo bottle fermentation and the grapes must be sourced from an identified wine region; minimum maturation time on the lees is 18 months. Climbing to the third and final level of the pyramid, the wines must also be bottled fermented and be made from grapes sourced from identified vineyard sites; the minimum maturation time is 30 months.

In addition to the new quality pyramid, the next few months will see the development of quality criteria for base wines and of a quality control blueprint. This will be accompanied by a marketing strategy designed to effectively communicate on the new categories. The quality scheme will only become official when it has achieved legal status and been incorporated into Austrian Wine Law, tabled for 2015.

Does this leave open, for levels 2 and 3, the option of the Transfer Method?
