Bordeaux: Philippe Palézis, a president determined to merge his cooperative winery in Flaujagues

Monday April 14 2014 by Vitisphere

"In 2014, our harvest will be handled by a large, neighbouring cooperative winery: Univitis or Rauzan",  states Philippe Palézis, the new president of the cooperative winery at Flaujagues (Cellier des Guinot), who succeeded Thierry Codelo on 26 March.  Once the results of the current audit are known, the winery's Board of Directors will immediately set the direction, which will be validated at the General Meeting. The decision itself will be taken particularly quickly, although "we have been aware of the need for the past four to five years," admits Philippe Palézis.

At 61, this polyactive wine producer is less concerned about being able to boast a cooperative winery in the village, and more about its long term viability. The cooperative is severely handicapped by “its old-style land architecture", producing 14,000 hectolitres of Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur appellation wines last year. The cooperative’s fifty members cultivate 350 hectares of vineyards, often with no prospect of selling them on.  Growing his own 6.5 hectares of vines organically, Palézis is convinced that the winery's gradual conversion to organic production is a "good strategic route to diversify the production of a small cooperative winery and retain its members."

With the wineries in Langoiran (the Cellier de Gramar) and Landerrouat-Duras-Cazaugitat (les Peyrières) having just merged, Bernard Solans is pleased to "hear of this determination,"  saying that "closer collaboration will trigger a new dynamic and better meet the expectations of the industry."  The President of the Fédération des Caves Vinicoles d'Aquitaine, who is also a director of the Union des Producteurs de Grangeneuve & Rauzan, told the Flaujagues winery, selected to be the reception facility: "You're old enough to do it!"
