Six young finalists took part in the ‘prix Vocation’, a biennial sommelier competition, on 25th March.  The competition is open to French students who are currently training to be wine waiters.  Maxime Courvoisier, the 22 year old student from the Lycée Hôtelier de Talence (Gironde), triumphed in the last round of this competition held in Paris.  He was followed by Justine Larcher, 19 years old and a student at the CFA Hôtelier Joseph Storck de Guebwiller (Haut-Rhin) and Laëtitia Boblin, 21 years old and a student at the Lycée Hôtelier Régional de Marseille.  After taking part in a blind tasting competition, each partipant had to give their response to the jury on the following questions: “how can wine be made more attractive and be developed as an aperitif?” and “is the 50cl bottle a good or a bad idea?”

The three winners get the opportunity to visit four different wine growing areas: Bordeaux, California, Chile and Languedoc.  The prize was organised by Baron Philippe de Rothschild France Distribution, and the winners and their teachers will be able to take part in the 2014 harvest at the Château Mouton Rothschild (where premier cru Pauillac is made).  The jury for the competition, which is supported by the Association de la Sommellerie Française and the Association des Sommeliers de Paris, includes the chairmen of these two organisations:   Michel Hermet (owner of the Cheval Blanc restaurant in Nîmes) and Luc Jamrozik (sommelier at the Hotel Baltimore in Paris).  Also on the jury was the 1992 winner of the Best Sommelier of the World competition Philippe Faure-Brac (Bistrot du sommelier, Paris) and Jacques Boudin (Atelier des compères, Paris).
