New Zealand : New R&D on low calorie, low alcohol content wines

Betting on a growing global consumption of low calorie and low alcohol content wines , New Zealand has launched an ambitious R&D program in those spaces.

Bringing together the Agriculture Ministry, the Ministry of Primary Industries and the New Zealand Wineries (NZW), this program aims at having NZ become the world leader in « Lifestyle » wines (wines with low calorie and alcohol readings).

To quickly provide production processes and techniques aimed at this new wine category, research will have to focus on the Viticultural and Oenological aspects of winemaking.

Philip Gregan, Head of NZW, highlights the specificities of this project :

« we aim at producing natural premium wines this by using sustainable wine making processes. This should allow to differentiate us from current techniques »
