With numerous titles already under his belt (Master of Wine, Master Sommelier, Uk’s Best Sommelier, Europe’s Best Sommelier 1996, World’s Best Sommelier 2010, OBE in 2011 and Man of the Year 2013 for Decanter...), Gérard Basset has just been named as the honorary president of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust. As of 20th January 2014, the most English of French sommeliers will take over from journalist Jancis Robinson (also a Master of Wine and OBE), who took the reins from wine critic Michael Broadbent (Master of Wine) and Hugh Jonhson, author of The World Wine Atlas.

The WSET, founded in London in 1969, offers lessons, for both professionals and amateurs alike, to learn and perfect the skill of wine tasting and to increase knowledge of the world of wine. Gérard Basset, who has been living in England since the middle of the 1980s, set up the Terra Vina hotel in Southampton with his wife Nina. He also created the chain Hotel du Vin.
