PGI wines: a sign of unknown quality?

Friday May 31 2013 by Vitisphere

74% of French wine consumers are not familiar with the "Protected Geographical Indication" terminology, according to a study published  by InterIGP (French professional organization gathering 75 PGI wines). While 33% of wine bottles sold in France are PGI, consumers remain unfamiliar with this European denomination (replacing the "vin de pays" common term).

However 78% of wine consumers think PGI wines is a guarantee of quality. In order to integrate PGI wines in consumer habits, IGP interbody, InterIGP, announces the launch of an "educational program on PGI wines, aiming both at consumers and professionals".
