uring the "Découvertes en Vallée du Rhône" week, the Wine Board of Rhône Valley (Inter Rhône) was optimistic. For Rhone wines, the market now seems equilibrated. In 2012, the wine production was down to 2.9 million hectoliters (-6% compared to 2011). President of Inter-Rhône, Christian Paly adds that this trend is sustained by the 2012 decrease of world wine production. "Ten years ago, we had an unbalanced situation with 60 million hl of suprlus in the world. In 2012, the wine world was equilibrated between production and consumption. We could even face a lack of wine."

Inter Rhône is optimistic about the export development, aiming 35% of Rhone wine sales through export in the coming years (currently 30% of Rhône wines are exported). On the French market, the situation is more difficult. Surpermarket circuits show a volume decline (-2.3% for AOC red Rhone Valley). But the Rhone Valley wines are also gaining value. Sales of wines over € 3 a bottle rose by 3%, while those of the wines sold less than 3 € declined by 6%.
