he Internationl Vine and Wine Organisation (OIV) has just published its estimates for the 2012 global wine production. It will be between 243.5 and 252.9 million hectolitres, averaging at  248.2 Mhl (-6% in relation to 2011). This weak level of wine production should not present shortage risks.

Italy will just move back into top position as the largest producing country (40.83 million hectolires, -3% in relation to 2011). With 40.48 million hectolitres, France goes down to second position with a steep reduction of 20 %. Spain will produce 31.5 million hectolires (-6%). These three countries will produce 120 Mhl, whilst 15 years ago they produced about 140 Mhl. The fourth biggest producer will be the United States (21 Mhl, +7%).
