Cognac: request for recognition in China
T

he BNIC (National Interprofessional Office for Cognac) last month registered an application, before the Chinese authorities, for Cognac to gain recognition under Appellation Control in China. A decision on this application, the first such request by a foreign appellation body, will be made in May. “For 13 years we have cooperated with the Chinese Administration,” explains Alain Philippe, the Director of BNIC. “Cognac has always enjoyed a particular status in China. When China acquired a geographical labelling system, we thought it prudent to register ourselves.” This recognition will hand those from the Charente region a new weapon with which to fight against the counterfeiting that accounts for 20% of overall sales in China.
