merican wine consumers can soon benefit from wine prices with up to 20% reductions. The website Amazon, until now mainly associated with books, is now extending its offers to wines at competitive prices. The online sale permits to directly deal with the customer, eliminating high costs of distribution in the USA (50% of the price of a bottle according to estimations by Mike Veseth, economist at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma).
Amazon has refused to comment on the project, which was revealed by the Wine Spectator, claiming to know that Amazon will offer vintners to set their own prices and to receive 47% of the sale. With the current distribution system, the producers only receive about 30% of the price paid by the consumer. Online wine sales in the USA only account for 1-2% of the market.
