Trends : German wines sell well throughout the world, DWI figures say
A

ccording to the German wine institute (Deutsche Wein Institut, DWI), Germany exported close to 2 million hectoliters of wine, for a total amount close to 398 million euros between July 2007 and July 2008  de vin entre juillet 2007 et juillet 2008. Overall, German wine sales have raised 43 % since 2000.

The United Kingdom no longer holds the first seat among Germany's clients, as the United States hold the pole position (99 millions d'euros), thanks to the surge of fame German riesling is currently enjoying with the youths of America. A strong euro, however, has sent sales down over the last months of the study : overall, they dropped 4 % in volume and 2 % in value. In the meantime, the British market is exchanging volume for value : Germany sold 934 000 hl of its wines there in 2000 ; in 2008, it's only 525 000 hl, but the value has barely flinched, which speaks for a remarkable demand for higher-range German wines demand from the British consumer, the DWI comments.

On emerging markets, as well as on some traditional ones, German wines sales are increasing, at a two figures rate, in China ( +53 % ), Russia ( +23% ), but also Belgium ( +32% ), Switzerland ( +27 % ) and Norway ( +12 % ).
