It seems that everyone is talking about Indage at the moment, not only about Indage wines, but also about the company itself. The group is one of the biggest Indian companies in the wine market. They have recently made their mark in the UK by buying Darlington Wines, a large, independent importer of New World wines.
No details were given about the cost of the deal, which included a packaging plant and a warehouse. The Indian company has also recently acquired three wineries in South Australia (Thatchi Wines, Loxton Winery and ViniCrest), and is counting on its new British subsidiary to develop its Australian wine sales in Britain. Their marketing angle? Curry! Generally speaking, the brand aims to answer the difficult question of what wine should be drunk with very spicy, exotic dishes. Furthermore, as well as buying Darlington Wines, Champagne Indage has also joined forces with two British packaging and distribution companies, with the aim of launching itself in the supermarket and restaurant sector in the coming three months. The curry industry in the UK is estimated to be worth around 3.5 million Pounds, while in India, thanks to the booming middle class, the wine market grew 52% in 2007. All that remains now is to convince curry lovers that they prefer wine to beer!
