Côtes de Duras, an AOC wine reliant on wine tourism

In the 1970’s, it was by abandoning the idea of selling its wines to Bordeaux and deciding to bottle and sell them directly that Duras managed to put an end to its crisis period. There is a long tradition of client contact in Duras and wine producers there have managed to convert to wine tourism without difficulty. 208 wine producers who, in total, own around 2000 hectares of land produce Les Côtes de Duras wines. Half of these producers sell 50 to 60 % of their wines directly.

La Maison des Vins à Duras
has become the regional nerve centre of wine tourism. In partnership with Jean-Marie Pigearias's Cap Sciences, they have created a fun experience, with a tasting centre, boutique and wine bar. Its heritage it still very much evident, with the Château de Duras, which forms part of the tour. It has been registered on the ‘Destinations Vignobles’ guide since 2004. The biggest wine tourism event in Duras is the ‘Fête du Vin et Faites Nuit Blanches’, the second of which will take place on the 10th of August 2008. Last year, the festival attracted 15000 people, who danced to the music of Philippe Corti. This year, Michèle Torr and Eve Angeli, amongst others, will be sharing the stage. Both the general council of Lot and Garonne and the Aquitaine regional council support the event.
