The Australian wine industry reaps the rewards of wine tourism

ccording to a study on wine tourism in Australia in 2003, 4.9 million local and foreign tourists visited at least one winery during the year. The report highlights the importance of this activity to the rural economy. Wine tourism helps to create jobs and income, by generating cellar door sales and business for hotels and restaurants, explains Fran Bailey, the Australian Minister for Tourism. Since 1999, the budget devoted to wine tourism by all sorts of visitors is increasingly higher. The most popular destinations include the Hunter Valley (NSW) and the Barossa Valley (South Australia).
