The only 'Pape' is that of Chateauneuf
T
he word “Pape is part of appellation Chateauneuf du Pape and its use is immediately associated with it. A growing number of brands use the word “Pape to benefit from the image of this appellation. Its Syndicat Intercommunal has uncovered over one hundred brands registered in France in the wine and spirits category sporting the term. Some of these include wines close to the appellation’s area of production. According to the Syndicat, most of these, distributed by supermarket chains or abroad, are likely to mislead consumers about their provenance and make the term banal. This is why, with the support of the INAO, it has taken out legal actions against a number of wine operators. In a most cases, justice has swung in favour of Chateauneuf du Pape and its producers. The Syndicat plans on continuing this protective strategy in 2005, for all wine brands from another provenance attempting to borrow the word “Pape.
