At 292.3 million hectolitres, world wine production reached a virtual all-time high, according to a report by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) released on Thursday 11 April. Production was close to the absolute record in 2004. Italy was the world's largest producer with 54.8 million hl, followed by France with 49.1 million hl and Spain with 44.4 million hl.

World consumption stalls

World consumption totalled 246 million hl, down 0.3% compared to 2017. This relative stability was mainly due to a decline in consumption in China and the United Kingdom. In Europe, consumption was stable in most countries.

World trade increased by volume to 108 million hl and by value to 31.3 billion euros (+1.2%). Spain remains the world’s leading exporter country with a 19.4% market share, whilst France maintains its world leadership by value with exports worth 9.3 billion euros in 2018.

Finally, global area under vine continued to decline, as it has since 2014, dropping to 7.4 million ha. Interestingly, Italy’s area under vine reportedly increased by 5,000 ha to 706,000 ha.
