"Next year there should be a merger to vote on!" said an ebullient Stéphane Héraud, chairman of the Tutiac co-operative winery on April 26 in Marcillac, at the AGM of Bordeaux’s leading co-operative (450 members over 4,000 hectares). It isn’t hard to guess which merger he was referring to: attendance by Éric Pothier, chairman of Sauternes Vignerons (20 members, 100 ha), spoke for itself. Recognising the asymmetrical relationship between the two co-operatives, the Preignac winegrower is nevertheless sticking to his objective with his new partner: "The aim is to rapidly gain influence and structure a chaotic area that has always lacked a co-operative to bring structure to it”.

A small group of “madmen”

"What is Sauternes Vignerons? It's a small group of madmen who established a co-operative winery in a region that has always turned its back on the experience," summed up Éric Pothier. Officially launched in 2015, the project to create a co-operative in Sauternes was originally coupled with the Marmandais co-op, which provided production and marketing services for the 2015 harvest. As the partnership reached its limits, Sauternes Vignerons refocused on Gironde and gradually moved closer to Tutiac.

Keeping its objective of 5,000 hectares by 2020 firmly in its sights, Tutiac sees the merger as an opportunity to open up to new vineyards, in other words, “a geographical readjustment within the department. Today, we are firmly anchored in northern Gironde. Gaining a foothold in the south will also give us access to red and white Graves and Côte de Bordeaux Cadillac for instance”, added Éric Hénaux.
