Terra Vitis is the only environmental standard specific to wine growing whose specifications were drawn up by growers mindful of industry challenges”, summed up Patrick Bongard, technical director for Castel’s chateaux and estates. Impressed by the relevance of the environmental standard, the Castel family has given the go-ahead for all of its properties to be certified Terra Vitis. It has 19 properties totalling 1,400 hectares under vine in France*.

After committing the first of its properties to the scheme in 2009, the Castel group has now certified 70% of its vineyards as Terra Vitis. The final raft of certifications is now underway with accreditation audits conducted this year, paving the way for certification for the end of 2018.

The Terra Vitis federation was launched in 2001 and now boasts 500 members covering 11,000 hectares. These are divided into six associations: Alsace, Beaujolais-Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, Loire and Rhone-Mediterranean. Although the Terra Vitis certificate is still little known to the general public, its popularity should increase following its recognition by the Ministry of Agriculture. It is currently equivalent to HVE or High Environmental Value level 2.

*The nineteen properties are mostly in Bordeaux with chateaux d’Arcins, Barreyres, Beychevelle (co-owned with Suntory), du Bousquet, Campet, Ferrande, de Goëlane, Haut-Coulon, Hourtou, Malbec, Montlabert, Latour Camblanes, du Lort, Tour Prignac and Cru la Maqueline. There are also Clos des Orfeuilles and chateaux L’Hyvernière and La Botinière in the Loire Valley, Domaine de la Clapière in Languedoc and Château Cavalier in Provence.
